SAE J2249 — The First Generation Standard
The Society of Automotive Engineers standard J2249 was the first widely adopted performance standard for WTORS in the US. It established basic testing requirements using simplified surrogate wheelchairs — a significant step forward, but one that didn't fully reflect real-world conditions.
ISO 10542 — The International Standard
ISO 10542 served as the primary international standard through the 2000s and 2010s. Like SAE J2249, it used generic surrogate wheelchair models for crash testing rather than actual wheelchairs — a limitation that WC18 was specifically designed to address.
RESNA WC18 — The Current Standard

Why Testing with the Actual Wheelchair Matters
The most significant change in WC18 is the requirement to test securement systems with the actual wheelchairs they are designed to secure. Modern powered wheelchairs and complex rehabilitation chairs have very different structural characteristics from the generic surrogates used in older testing.
The frame geometry, attachment point locations, and structural rigidity of a real power wheelchair behave very differently in a crash than a simplified surrogate — meaning a product that "passed" under SAE J2249 may perform very differently in a real crash scenario.
Bottom line: WC18-certified products have been proven to perform as intended with specific real wheelchair models under crash conditions. Older-standard products were tested with generic surrogates that may not represent the chairs your riders actually use.
Is WC18 Compliance Legally Required?

Do You Need to Replace Your Existing Equipment?
