Course summary and where to learn more

Here is the whole course on one page, followed by further reading on our blog.

The 12 modules in brief

  • Why training matters. Securement protects people, and a trained driver prevents most failures.
  • Know your equipment. Learn each part of a tie-down and occupant restraint system.
  • The right product for the job. Products are built for different uses. Choose by vehicle, chair and rider.
  • Inspection and care. Inspect daily and on a schedule, and retire damaged parts.
  • Securing the wheelchair. Use four points on the chair's securement points, and check the result.
  • Securing the rider. Position the lap and shoulder belt correctly on every rider.
  • Children and pediatric riders. Small riders need the right equipment and extra care.
  • Difficult situations and tight spaces. Plan ahead, never exceed ratings, and escalate.
  • Vehicle safety and medical equipment. Carry the right gear, and store it so it cannot move.
  • Boarding, lifts and caring for passengers. Load safely and treat riders with dignity.
  • Emergencies, incidents and records. Respond calmly, report facts and keep records.
  • Vehicle types and who is driving. Rules differ, but every rider deserves a secured chair and a belt.

Five habits to take with you

  1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions first.
  2. Secure the chair at four points and belt the rider every trip.
  3. Inspect before every trip and remove damaged equipment.
  4. Never exceed a rating, and escalate when unsure.
  5. Write it down.
